Rice in the snow
Christopher Rice speaks out about fame
by Joe E. Jeffreys
Christopher Rice admits that sometimes "I don't know if I am being taken seriously." In the company of children of the famous from Liza Minnelli to Sean and Julian Lennon to Colin Hanks and John Buffalo Mailer, his plight, like theirs, is haunted by demands to over-prove their talents.
Son of vampire novelist Anne Rice and poet Stan Rice, 23-year-old Christopher Rice was an immediate publishing sensation. His first novel, A Density of Souls, rode the New York Times bestseller list last year and his new novel, The Snow Garden, is a page-turner. With deep mysteries, sudden reversals, explosions, gun fights and car crashes, its pages blizzard by.
spare time," he says. "This is something I can do, alone in my dorm room, that no one can reject right now. I ended up writing a screenplay that I don't even want to read now."
Dropping out of Brown after his first year, he transferred into New York University's film school to pursue his first love.
Christopher Rice
"Having a famous last name gets you the access," says the articulate and charming, out writer. "The advantages of it are incredible. I can get all the meetings 1 want but if I couldn't go in there with something to back it up with, I would be gone."
His new novel more than delivers the goods. In it a married college professor is seduced into an affair by an enigmatic male student. Set in a small snowbound Northeast college town, the story is one of murder, scandal, intrigue, sexual menace, secrets and full of big cinematic visuals.
"I don't know what it says about me that I think in those sort of visuals," the author offers.
Born in San Francisco, Rice's family moved to New Orleans when he was ten. There he, much like the character Stephen Conlin in his first novel whose father is also a poet, became the star of his high school's drama program. It was Rice's failure to be cast in a theatre production at Brown University, a school not unlike the Atherton of his new novel, that first led him to writing in a serious way.
"So, I thought I've always written in my

"I was a child of the movies and not of books. I really only became a bookworm my first year in college," says the literary scion. “It might have actually turned me off to reading in a weird way. Not because they tried to force it down my throat, but it's like the child of whoever invented corn flakes isn't going to want to eat corn flakes."
'At film school he devel-
oped "a big crisis in confidence and dropped out. I didn't know where I was going or what I was going to do next. I ended up writing A Density of Souls, which I never planned to do."
Like white rice in freshly fallen snow, one of his greatest fears in college was "that I would become anonymous far from home." Currently living in Los Angeles, where he moved during the eight months he spent writing his second novel, Rice is committed to The Snow Garden becoming a film.
With his books centering on gay characters, Rice admits that "I was expecting it to be a huge disadvantage. I frankly didn't think as many people were going to read A Density of Souls as did. I was surprised at the number of straight friends and straight family members who immediately read it and read it straight through. I thought it was going to be a big drawback. Maybe it was countered by the fact that there was so much buzz about it being by Anne Rice's son."
Christopher Rice's compelling fiction, however, would find an avid readership regardless of the name on the book jacket.
